Web Tips

We realize that not everyone is an experienced Internet explorer. To make your journey through our web site and others that you visit more enjoyable, we offer the following Web Tips.

Our Cool Links section lists many different sites that we like and thought you might like as well. Whether it's insurance or travel, you can find it on the Internet ... if you know your way around. We'll be glad to provide the compass!

Tips On Using the Internet & Viewing Web Sites

1. Hypertext
Throughout this web site, and others you will visit, you will see underlined text like this. This is called "hypertext" and if you point your mouse to it and click, you will go to a different page within the site. Some icons and pictures also act as hypertext. If you roll your mouse over a picture and it turns into a hand, click and you will be transported to your destination.

2. URLs
A URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is the address for a site on the World Wide Web. This is the format web browsers use to locate files over the Internet.

Use you bookmark or hotlist feature of your browser. This allows you to "mark" a web page that you can access later on without entering the complete address. Your time on-line searching for sites will decrease greatly. Bookmark now so you can visit us again.

4. Searching
If you are looking for a particular topic within a web site, look to see if a "search" button is available. If so, use it to quickly find the topic you are interested in.

5. Search Engines
You can also use a number of Search Engines to look for topics across the entire Internet. There are literally thousands of search engines, pick two and learn them well. Yahoo, Infoseek, Excite and Webcrawler are just a few available. Fundsnet provides you with access to 25 engines to assist you in your search

6. Email
When sending an email to someone, don't shout. Using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS LOOKS AS IF YOU ARE SHOUTING! Stick to lowercase letters.

7. FAQs
You may see this term as you surf the web. FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. These are handy documents that ask common questions and provide the answers.

8. Short Address
With most browsers, especially Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may not have to enter the entire address of the site you want to visit. For example, if you only enter fundsnetservices in your browser's URL window, you will go to the Fundsnet homepage. You do not have to spend the time entering This trick usually works if the address begins with www and ends with com.

9. Text-Only Mode
View web sites in text-only mode if you want to decrease the time it takes to load a page. See your browser's manual for more details.

10. Increase Your Cache
The files from a site that you visit are downloaded to a cache on your hard drive. This is helpful when you want to return to a site you already visited. All the files don't have to download again. Your browser pulls them from your cache. Remember to empty your cache on a regular basis because it can become huge with files. See your browsers manual for more details.

11. Choose Your Own Start-up Home Page
When you launch your web browser it will take you to the default home page, usually the manufacturers (i.e, Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer). Select your home page so you can start where you want. Perhaps you want to begin your surfing each day reading the headlines from a national newspaper. We've listed several in our Cool Links section. See your browser's manual for more details.

12. Avoid Traffic Jams
Surf during off-hours. Just as you avoid rush hour traffic on the highways, you want to do the same on the superhighway. If your schedule permits, think about accessing the Internet during off-peak times such as early morning or late evening.

13. Get A Faster Connection
If you're using a 14.4 or slower modem, think about upgrading to at least a 28.8 or 33.6 modem to get a faster connection to the Internet. These speeds will make your adventure more enjoyable by decreasing the amount of time you wait for a page to load or download a file. Whatever speed modem you use, be sure to check with your local service provider to confirm that it is supported.

14. Plug-Ins
Make sure you have a good supply of plug-ins installed. Plug-ins are software programs that extend the capabilities of your web browser by letting you view video, hear music or access animated files. Netscape and Microsoft offer many different types of plug-ins for their respective browsers. Check out their home pages for more information about plug-ins.

15. Address Extensions
There are many different Internet address extensions. Here's a brief explanation of each.

.com - corporation
.edu - educational institution
.gov - government institution
.org - non-profit organization
.mil - military organization
.net - network provider
